Paul Agius
Melbourne, Australia
Paul is part of the new wave of electronic producer/dj’s currently emerging in the Melbourne underground dance music scene.
Wanting to both make a significant contribution to the emerging Melbourne scene and fill a musical and creative void that had become apparent, Paul along with brother Dave teamed up to promote their own night, Likuid. In its infancy (2002) the night ran as a popular weekly event but soon evolved into an established underground monthly party and gained the respect of regular party punters and respected dj’s alike, both locally and internationally.
Paul’s long had a special fascination for electronic dance music cutting across all genres and sub-genre’s, and has developed an awareness of quality sounds and grooves. Like many of his peers, during the late 80s and early 90s, most of his time (and money) was spent listening to indie tunes coming out of the both burgeoning hip hop scenes Stateside and, across the other side of the Atlantic, the Manchester and electronic pop music scenes in the UK. Seminal artists, crews and producers such as Public Enemy, Afrika Bambaataa, Arthur Baker, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, NWA, New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, 808 State, Stone Roses, Trevor Horn, and Pop Will Eat Itself were, amongst others, influential during this time.
Like many of his peers, Paul lists Melbourne’s most infamous underground night, Sunny and the sounds of its dj’s, Gab Oliver, Ozzy LA, Gavin Keitel and Phil K as major influences. Internationally, dj’s like Eddie Richards, Terry Francis, Tyler Stadius, Craig Richards and, more recently, minimal-tech inspired producers such as Jeremy Caulfield, Seph, Onur Onzer, and Jorge Savoretti (and the like) have also had a hand in shaping Paul’s sound.
As has been the case for many of his peers, Paul is now also embracing production as a vehicle for more immediate and original artistic expression – his first release a remix of Markojux’s babelfiche on Pinksilver. Paul’s tracks are receiving support from local dj’s, with his tracks being played at clubs such as Sunny (Brown Alley), Pinksilver @ Loop and Ffour.
